TWO RESIDENCES OF THE VILLA WARU
The villa offers a flexible and convenient choice of options to accommodate groups of less than six to as many as 20 people in four wonderfully comfortable houses. The minimum booking of the Main House will give guests access to the Garden Residence, the large swimming pool, poolside ‘bale’ pavilion, the main kitchen, two dining areas and the yoga pavilion.
For groups taking 5 bedrooms or more, an exclusive occupancy of the entire villa consisting of two Residences is guaranteed.
When only the Garden Residence with either 3 or 4 bedrooms is booked at discounted rate, the 2-bedroom Guest House of the Pond Residence with its smaller swimming pool can be reserved – the staff will provide the complete catering service and guests will be able to enjoy the generous space including the lawn around the pond with its sparkling fountains, pond-side massage bale and the Guest House’s poolside wooden deck.
GARDEN AND SWIMMING POOLS
The extensive hide-and-seek garden, which links the Garden Residence and the Pond Residence, is as much a work of art as the villa’s interiors, characterised by rambling pathways, poetic ponds filled with giant koi fish, bougainvillea hedges, a wedding lawn, a pergola dripping with thunbergia flowers, stone statues and mature tropical trees, making it very easy for guests to lose themselves in a dappled corner.
The garden of the Pond Residence was inspired by a fabled water palace, dominated by a massive lily and lotus pond, complete with bridges, stepping stones, fountains, a waterfall, and an island that serves as a serene setting for a romantic wedding ceremony. On one side is a ‘bale’ relaxation pavilion – ideal for an indulgent massage, while the Residence’s cleverly-designed 7 x 5 metre swimming pool appears to be part of the pond, when in fact it is a separate freshwater pool surrounded by greenery to create a natural setting for a refreshing dip.
At the Garden Residence, the beautiful 17 x 9 metre swimming pool embraces the culture and ambience of the island. Evocative of an ancient Balinese bathing place, it is bordered by a stone deck and a lawn punctuated with plant-filled urns, dwarf lamps, and sweet-scented frangipani trees. Presiding over the pool is a shaded gazebo with a cushioned daybed, chairs and a table. Sun loungers and umbrellas are, of course, provided for guests to relax poolside.
Finally, at The Cottage, the yoga pavilion appears to float on a moat of flowering lilies to create a truly peaceful Zen-like setting.
The villa was named after the Waru, or sea hibiscus, tree that takes pride of place in a special corner of the garden in front of the Main House.
MAIN HOUSE (PART OF THE GARDEN RESIDENCE)
The 3-bedroom Main House is a two-storey thatch-roofed building. On the ground floor is a meet-and-greet reception room; large and octagonal in shape with floor-to ceiling windows on most of the walls and glass doors that open onto garden terraces. Filled with natural light, the room is elegantly furnished with cushioned colonial daybeds, chairs and a coffee table.
Next to the reception room, a comfy TV lounge can be found, where groups, couples or individuals can escape to enjoy the latest movies on a 55-inch TV. Fast and reliable fibre-optic Internet access makes it possible to watch online movies and shows. Furnished with a daybed and beanbags, this cosy air-conditioned room is also filled with books and games, including a table-top chess board. Adjoining this is a twin bedroom, known as the ‘Colourful Suite’, accommodating up to four people using trundle beds that roll out from under the main frames. The bedroom comes with its own bathroom, complete with a shower, and ample wardrobe space.
Also on the ground floor is the romantic ‘Golden’ bedroom, furnished with a time-honoured four-poster king-sized bed, draped with white netting and capped with a decorative gold painted canopy. The majesty of this room is completed with two antique armoires, an oriental carpet and an ensuite garden bathroom within a private courtyard. The tranquil picture is completed with a huge sunken bathtub, which rests in an elevated pavilion sheltered by a thatched roof. Here, a fountain and ponds combine to create an atmosphere reminiscent of the old Bali.
The upper floor is home to the Teak Suite, Villa Waru’s largest and most sumptuous master suite comprising a bedroom, a walk-though dressing room and an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower (note there is no bathtub in this bathroom). The bedroom is characterised by teak-panelled walls and ceiling, a polished teakwood floor, a writing desk, planter chairs, and a king-sized bed crafted in leather. French windows can be opened to the sound of birdsong.
Doors from both the bedroom and the bathroom lead onto a broad wooden terrace with a bar and an enchanting view of the villa’s main swimming pool and garden. Furnished with comfortable cushioned chairs, as well as a circular dining table – perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner under the shelter of a soaring roof, this fabulous, cool and breezy space is a favourite with guests, at all times of day.
A separate building houses the large service kitchen, fitted with professional equipment that will make any chef or outside caterer very happy indeed. Adjoining the kitchen is an open sided dining room, cooled by ceiling fans and natural breezes, and furnished with a huge 4.5-metre teakwood table with bench seats accommodating up to 18 people – or 24 with the addition of an extension table. What a beautiful spot for a leisurely family lunch!
THE COTTAGE (LOCATED NEAR THE MAIN HOUSE IN THE GARDEN RESIDENCE)
Surrounded by picturesque ponds filled with lotus and lily flowers, the Cottage (otherwise known as Gecko Suite) boasts two pavilions, one of which is a charming single-storey suite with a queen-size bed and a semi-outdoor bathroom. Just footsteps away is a large, open-sided yoga pavilion, its tranquil location – away from the villa’s main entertainment areas – has made this a cherished space for guests who wish to practise meditation or participate in yoga sessions. Cooled by ceiling fans, the gazebo features a red tiled floor with a guest washroom situated behind.
MASTER SUITE (THE LARGEST OF ALL THE ROOMS, PART OF THE POND RESIDENCE)
The one-bedroom Master Suite or Lucky Eight is an impressive standalone octagonal building accessed via a storybook hump-backed bridge over a lotus and lily-filled pond with a waterfall. A short set of steps leads up to a wooden deck with a dining table for 10, lulled by the sounds of running water. Colourful Balinese doors open into Villa Waru’s second media room, a restful space with a 50-inch TV with an all-in-one soundbar speaker system. Next to this is an eight-sided bedroom furnished with a king-size four-poster bed, complete with an open-air ensuite bathroom fitted with a soaking tub surrounded by another lotus pond. An exceptional feature here is the shower room fashioned in the style of a Turkish hammam; the star and moon cutouts within the domed roof are designed to channel the moonlight.
A flight of stairs leads up to a large octagonal loft room with a high pointed roof, timber panelled walls and a polished wooden floor. This quiet creative space is furnished with comfy sofas, a desk, chairs and a bookcase filled with books. Views of the pond can be glimpsed through the eye-shaped windows.
Finally, on the below-ground level, accessed via a secret door, guests are in for a surprise! In fact, very few villas in Bali can boast anything as special as this ‘pièce de résistance’ – a large, soundproof, air-conditioned, underground wine cellar, party room and bar, with a stone vaulted ceiling and limestone coralline walls, a billiard table, and a powerful sound system through which guests can play their own music. What could be a better place for relaxing with a few beers over a competitive game of pool, or turning up the sound full volume – without disturbing the neighbours or other family guests at the villa – and dancing ‘til dawn.
GUEST HOUSE (PART OF THE POND RESIDENCE)
The two-bedroom single-storey guesthouse is distinguished by colonial-inspired modern architecture set around a lily pond, which is filled with fish, embellished with a water fountain, and traversed by stepping stones. A 6.5 x 5-metre swimming pool, surrounded by water lilies appears to be part of the pond, but this is just an illusion; the pool offers fresh clear water for guests to cool off. The bedrooms are spacious and light with high ceilings, polished wood floors, contemporary furnishings and a white décor. One room is furnished with a queen bed, while the other is ideal for families with a 3.6-metre-wide four-poster bed offering any configuration of three beds. Each room has a delightful outdoor terrace for relaxing or reading, and a private bathroom with a shower and a large sunken soaking tub. Between the bedrooms is a living area furnished with sofas.
