Canggu is a small village on the beach about 20 minutes north of Seminyak, half way to Tanah Lot. Canggu is widely used though to refer to a large coastal stretch of about 8 km, running north from the village of Berawa (north of Seminyak) to the village of Cemagi (south of Tanah Lot). The long coastal line divided on several beaches: Batu Bolong Beach, Echo Beach, Pererenan Beach, Seseh Beach and Mengening Beach along the way. The beaches have dark grey or black sand and are not particularly good for swimming, but do offer some renowned and challenging surfing spots.

Canggu is known not only for its surf breaks, but recently also developed into a multi-cultural hipster stronghold. There are a lot of healthy cafes and restaurants where you can have your after surf vitamins, individual small shops and beach bars with the best setting to enjoy magnificent sunsets with a cold drink or local markets where you can buy fresh foods and handcrafted souvenirs.

There are some good surf spots in Canggu area for both beginners and intermediates: Berawa – This semi reef-break offers various peaks for all surf levels and is also popular among expats and tourists to hang out and enjoy the nice panoramic view. It needs a bit of swell to work well but for surfers this is a fun spot to practice their surf skills and have a good time. Best tide to surf the main peaks is mid-tide.

Batu Bolong is a semi-reef break with mellow and slow waves, perfect for the advanced beginners and intermediate surfers to practice. As a beginner make sure you already have some paddle skills, because you’re going to need them, as the line up is about 150m off-shore. Luckily there is a big channel for the easy paddle-out and some rest in between.

The area is popular with many expatriates who choose to live here, and a large number of the villas owned by overseas nationals. Much of the area features quietly undulating terrain with the beautiful rice paddies.
